Why Do We Celebrate Halloween?

Why Do We Celebrate Halloween? Well, I celebrate it because it is a fun, no-pressure holiday. However, some would disagree. The celebration of Halloween brings about many religious debates because of the history of Halloween.

Many religions believe that Halloween should not be celebrated because it is a pagan holiday.

Halloween began as the Festival of Samhain, which was a festival that the Druids used to worship the Lord of Darkness. Evil spirits and human sacrifices are well known aspects of Samhain and can bring about negative associations for some Christians. Despite that, lots of Christians celebrate Halloween all All Saint’s Eve or All Hallow’s Eve.

Why do we dress up?

The main reason we celebrate Halloween by dressing up is because the winter was a frightening time for the Celtic villagers, the chances of running out of food was high, so the villagers often had to leave their homes in search of food.

During the cold dark winter months, it was believed that the evil spirits returned to Earth looking for human bodies to inhabit.

By dressing up in costumes when they went out looking for food the Celtic villagers believed that the wandering spirits would mistake them for other spirits and leave them alone.

Why do we Trick or Treat?

It is believed that the concept of “Trick-Or-Treating” can from the English All Souls' Day parades.

During the parade, the poor people would walk around begging the wealthy families for food. The wealthy families would give the poor people pastries called “soul cakes” and in exchange for the pastries, they would ask the poor to pray for their relatives that had passed away.

Others believe that “Trick-Or-Treating” came from the Celtic villagers that left bowls of food on their doorsteps to ward off the evil spirits.

It is also believed that the evil spirits would come to the door disguised as people in the hopes of claiming a new soul, which is known as a trick. The treat was the huge feats that the Celtics took part on after the festival was over.
