Las Vegas Costume

by Stephanie
(Orange, CA)

The VEGAS costume, in all of its glory!

The VEGAS costume, in all of its glory!

Every year my costume seems to get bigger and crazier, and this year was definitely no exception...

I am a HUGE fan of Vegas and go out there several times a year, so it made sense to celebrate one of my favorite places by dressing as it for Halloween this year!!

My boyfriend (Jeff) and I came up with a concept drawing and then started working on how we would engineer the costume and began collecting all the materials and everything we would need in September. I ordered most of the battery powered lighting from eBay and various online outlets. I joked that it felt like Christmas every day when I came home to a package or two sitting on my doorstep for weeks straight.

The costume is built around a used external frame hiking backpack (thanks, eBay!). Jeff welded a metal frame to support the half-circle "table" with custom fittings that could be taken on and off of the backpack frame so I could get in and out of the costume. Then I used foam, fabric, and LOTS of hot glue to build onto the table and start adding all of the Vegas features.

The costume includes a volcano (paper mache with a small computer fan and LEDs inside to light and move fabric flames create the illusion of fire), a fountain (fake floral design water poured into a custom-build fountain shape and then underlit with blue LEDs and more computer fans which made clear streamers move around like water), a 24-hour wedding "chapel" with a bride and groom and LED heart lights, a working slot machine and roulette table, a light up LED dance floor, and a bar.

The "crown jewel" of the costume was our custom made replica of the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, which we built totally from scratch using wood, metal, plexiglass, and lots of LEDs and neon batter powered wire (called EL wire).

And how could it be Vegas without a giant feather showgirl fan behind my head?

The costume is HUGE and definitely a show stopper. But I was amazed that we pulled it off and it was a lot of fun seeing people's reactions!

I am already thinking about what to be next year!!

it's homemade!

To the comment that it looks like everything was bought:

The only things I bought for this were the feather fan, the gold table skirt, the neon wires, and the slot machine.

Everything else was made using foam, glue, metal, wood, fabric, custom-wired LEDs, etc. My boyfriend built the lighting for the Vegas sign (again entirely made on our own!) all out of individual LEDs which he wired to a control board.

I even photoshopped the cards and hotel photos myself and had them blown up at kinkos... Just wanted to set the record straight that this costume was really a homemade effort (and took 6 weeks or so to make!)
