How to Make a Gene Simmons Costume

"The Demon" is just your typical a blood-spitting, fire-breathing, and tongue-wagging persona in the hard rock band KISS. Make sure your costume lives up to it! Choose either the ALIVE or the DESTROYER Costume.

Both costumes start with black pants and top. The tighter the better.

If you’re making the Alive costume, make cutouts in the thighs, chest and along the arms. Then start embellishing with studs and spikes. StudsandSpikes.com has an amazing selection, including Gene Simmons Studs.

If you’re making the Destroyer costume, you’ll need a way to make the armor. You can either use old football pads spray painted silver or get creative with silver duct tape. If using the duct tape, paper cups, bowls, and plates are good to use to wrap the duct tape around. Duct tape them together to finish the look. Don’t forget to do the spikes!

Gene Simmons Destroyer KISS CostumeGene Simmons Cape

The cape is essential to completing your look. Either buy a premade cape or go to a fabric store and get some black fabric that is long enough for you to spread your hands out and have the cape expand and then add a little. Ask for help if you need.

Cut the fabric to match Gene’s cape. Embellish it by adding round studs or silver tape from the top to each of the points. Do this on the front and the back.

Now attach it to your arms across your back. There are a couple of ways you can do this. One is by cutting a small hole in the fabric at your wrists, elbows, and neck and tying a black string to yourself and through the cape. You may want to use string that has wire in it to hold the shape of the cape. Another is to simply tape it to yourself using silver duct tape. Either way you’ll probably need help to get it right since it is on your back.

Gene Simmons Boots

Now for the awesome boots!

If you want to know how to make Gene Simmons boots, first you’ll need to find thigh high platform black boots. If you’re out shopping a lot of these boots come in women’s sizes. Normally the conversion is to add 2 sizes to your size to find the women’s size. However, since these are platform boots with heels, add 3 sizes. So if you normally wear a size 11, buy a women’s size 14. You can always add inserts if you need some extra padding.

Now that you have your boots, add the embellishment. For the Alive boots, cut the top of the boot in the front and back to form the triangle and add studs. For the Destroyer boots, go back to using your trusty silver duct tape with cut out paper plates. To make the dragon on top of the boots, paper mache and paint is a great way to go!

Another option is to use black soccer shin guards and embellish them.

KISS Demon Makeup

Gene Simmons Costume MakeupWondering how to do the Gene Simmons costume makeup? Easy! You either buy a kit and follow the instructions or do it yourself.

To DIY, you’ll need white clown face paint, black face paint, black eyeliner, powder brush, baby powder, and black lipstick.

Cover your face in the white clown paint. Using a powder brush, lightly cover your face with baby powder – this will help the makeup stay. Line both eyes on top and bottom with black eyeliner. Now, using the eyeliner, draw the outline of the demon shape on your face. It may be easier for you if you draw it out on paper, cut it out and use it as a stencil. Fill in the outline with the black face paint. Now take the eyeliner and outline the widow’s peak on your forehead. Fill it in with your black face paint.

Next, line your lips using the black eyeliner. This is important since most lipsticks run and you don’t want it to look messy. Fill in the lip liner with the black lipstick! Now you look like the Demon!

Gene Simmons KISS Hair

You must top off your Gene Simmons costume with the right hair!

If you have black hair, great! Tease it and hairspray it to the hilt. Put the top part of your hair in a ponytail on top of your head.

If you don’t have the hair for this look, just get yourself a KISS Demon Wig.

Finishing Touches

Look for a studded choker and/or wristbands to help complete your Gene Simmons costume. Also, if you have a black guitar, strap it on with a black, studded strap. If you want to go all out, make yourself a replica of the axe guitar.

Get into Character

Gene’s stage persona is quite different than his real life persona. On stage, Gene is The Demon and acts as such! He’s crazy and bigger than life. Off stage, he speaks four languages (English, Hungarian, Hebrew and German) and is currently learning Japanese and Mandarin. He claims he has "never been high, drunk, or smoked in [his] life" but his addiction is women. He claims to have slept with over 4,600 women.

Prior to forming KISS, Gene Simmons was an elementary school teacher.

Aside from KISS, Gene has a number of ventures: resurrecting his record label, $immons Records, acting in and producing feature films, starting up his own Women of Wrestling league (with a W.O.W. magazine and clothing line to follow), creating his own radio talk show, and possibly even going on the lecture circuit.

This quote should help you understand Gene quite a bit -- "My hero is me. Why? Because I was a poor little kid who was told 'Hey stupid, can’t you speak English?' now all those people work for me."
