Fun Halloween Facts

One of the most well known fun Halloween facts is that Halloween is not just a kid’s holiday, just as many adults enjoy Halloween, perhaps that is left over from how much they enjoyed Halloween as a kid.

While kids enjoy the trick or treating aspect, adults enjoy having an excuse to dress up and party. In fact, one third of all adults dress up and partake in Halloween activities

So with the adults who enjoy Halloween in mind here are some fun Halloween facts that will surely make your head spin.

  • 48% of people in the United States believe in ghosts, which would be why ghost costumes are so popular on Halloween.

Of the 48% of Americans who believe in ghosts, only 22% of them say they have seen or felt a ghost.

I'm going to vote that 48% will jump up soon because of how popular ghost hunting has become.

It is also interesting to note that women are more likely to admit that they believe in ghosts than men are.

  • The next full moon that will occur on Halloween is in 2020, making Halloween even spookier.

  • Many historic things, most of them dealing with death and destruction, have fallen on Halloween.
In 834, the first Halloween was celebrated.
In 1876, a cyclone hit Bengal and killed 200,000 people.
In 1918, the Spanish Flu killed 21,000 people during the week of Halloween.
In 1926, Harry Houdini died in Detroit.
In 1941 Mount Rushmore was completed.
    Fascinating, right?

  • Dracula is one of the most filmed movie characters ever. Think about how many movies focus on Dracula and vampires and you will probably agree. In 2005, 1.4 million people wore a vampire cape along with fangs, which makes Dracula and vampires one of the most popular Halloween costumes. And that was before Twilight!

  • When polled, no matter when they are polled, Americans have voted Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, and Psycho as the three scariest movies of all time. There is no rankings among the movies themselves, nobody thinks one is scarier than the other is; they are just voted the scariest.

  • In 2004, Utah had the highest proportion of its total population out trick-or-treating; this group consisted of the 5 to 13 year olds. Alaska had the second highest proportion of its 5 to 13 year olds out trick or treating.

  • Jack-O-Lanterns used to be hollowed out turnips instead of pumpkins. The Jack-O-Lantern as a hollowed out turnip started in Ireland. It wasn’t until people immigrated to America where pumpkins were more plentiful that the tradition to use pumpkins began.

  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the most popular Halloween candy, 20.8% have voted it is their favorite candy.

Candy Corn is the second favorite Halloween Candy with 15.8% of the people voting for it.
